By Matt Ruggieri, Co-Founder and Head of Product Development
The Radical Repair® line was not designed as a collection of independent products that happen to share branding. It was designed as a system, where each step builds on the last and the ingredients across every formula work together rather than against each other. When the full routine is built correctly, the results are meaningfully better than any single product in the line used on its own.
This guide walks through how to build that routine: morning, evening, and weekly treatment, with guidance on how to introduce it at a pace your skin can actually handle and how to adapt it for different skin types.
The Philosophy Behind the System
Most skincare systems ask you to choose between efficacy and tolerance. You can use retinol and deal with the purging and sensitivity that typically follows, or you can use gentle, barrier-focused products and accept slower results. The Radical Repair® system was built around the premise that this is a false choice.
Every product in the line is formulated around the same core idea: support the skin barrier first, then deliver active results. The barrier is the foundation that determines how well your skin responds to everything else in your routine. When the barrier is intact and resilient, actives absorb better, skin is less reactive, and results appear faster and hold longer. When the barrier is compromised, even mild actives can cause irritation, and the skin spends its energy on repair rather than renewal.
The practical result is a retinol serum that uses bio-retinol alternatives rather than pure retinoic acid, a cleanser that deposits humectant actives rather than stripping, a tonic that prepares and supports rather than exfoliates aggressively, and a barrier balm that seals and protects rather than just moisturizing the surface. Each step is designed to leave the barrier in a better state than it found it, which is what makes layering the full system possible for skin types that would normally struggle with a retinol-centered routine.
Restoring Balance with HydraCactus Complex®
Many of the products in the Radical Repair® line contains HydraCactus Complex®, Onekind's proprietary ingredient blend developed exclusively for this system. It combines two ingredients:
- Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem Extract (Prickly Pear Cactus): rich in betalains, polysaccharides, and amino acids that help calm the appearance of redness and support the skin barrier's ability to look more balanced and resilient
- Desert Date Oil (Balanites Aegyptiaca): a nourishing oil high in oleic and linoleic fatty acids that helps skin look softer, more supple, and more balanced
Having the same proprietary complex across every step means the barrier is being supported continuously, not just in one product. Whether you are cleansing, toning, treating, or moisturizing, HydraCactus Complex® is working at every stage. This cumulative effect is part of what makes the system perform differently from using a mix of products from different brands that were not designed to work together.

Your Morning Routine
The morning routine focuses on cleansing overnight residue, balancing skin's pH and barrier state, protecting, and brightening. It sets the skin up for the day rather than delivering heavy treatment actives, which are better suited to the evening when the skin is in repair mode and is not immediately exposed to environmental stressors.
Step 1: Cleanse
Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser
Apply to damp skin, massage for 30 to 60 seconds, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. In the morning, your skin only needs to remove overnight product residue and light sebum, so the cleanse can be brief. The sulfate-free formula will not strip the barrier that your nighttime products spent hours supporting. Pentavitin® (Saccharide Isomerate) and Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid stay on skin after rinsing to keep it feeling hydrated and balanced before the next step.
Step 2: Tone
Radical Repair® Balancing Tonic
Apply immediately after cleansing while skin is still slightly damp, either by pressing a small amount directly into the skin with clean hands or by using a cotton pad. The tonic helps rebalance the skin's surface and prepares it to receive the products that follow. Applied before your moisturizer, it improves the absorption and performance of everything layered on top.
Step 3: Eye Treatment
Radical Repair® Ultra Brightening Eye Balm
Apply a small amount around the orbital bone using your ring finger, pressing gently rather than dragging the delicate eye area skin. Eye treatment goes on before your moisturizer so it makes direct contact with the skin around the eye rather than sitting on top of a heavier moisturizer layer.
Step 4: Moisturize
Warm a small amount between your fingertips and press into the skin across your face and neck. The Radical Repair® Barrier Balm is the sealing step in the morning routine: it locks in the hydration delivered by the tonic, adds its own barrier-fortifying lipids, and leaves skin looking calm, smooth, and resilient before SPF and makeup.
Step 5: SPF
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as the final step in your morning routine, over all skincare products. Sun protection is the single most impactful thing you can do for long-term skin appearance, and it is what makes every other investment in your routine worth making. The Radical Repair® system does not include a dedicated SPF product; use the sunscreen of your choice as your final step.
Your Evening Routine
The evening routine is where the deeper treatment work happens. Skin cell renewal accelerates during sleep, making the PM routine the right time for retinol, targeted treatments, and richer barrier support. The goal is to give skin everything it needs to repair, renew, and recover overnight.
Step 1: First Cleanse (if wearing SPF or makeup)
Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser
If you wore sunscreen or makeup during the day, begin with an oil-based or emollient first cleanse to dissolve the surface layer before your second cleanse. The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser is not part of the Radical Repair® system, but it is the ideal first cleanse partner for it. Its non-foaming emollient formula melts away SPF and makeup using botanical oils, leaving the barrier in a calm, clear state for the second cleanse that follows. Apply to dry skin, massage for 30 to 60 seconds, add water to emulsify, then rinse.
Step 2: Second Cleanse
Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser
Follow the first cleanse with the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser as your second cleanse. Because the surface layer has already been removed, the second cleanser works efficiently on clear skin and delivers its humectant actives directly. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Step 3: Tone
Radical Repair® Balancing Tonic
Apply the Radical Repair® Barrier Balancing Tonic immediately after cleansing on slightly damp skin. In the evening routine, this step is particularly important before retinol application: it balances the skin's surface and supports the barrier environment that will help the retinol work with less irritation.
Step 4: Retinol Serum
Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum
Apply a pea-sized amount across the face after the tonic has absorbed. The Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum uses bio-retinol alternatives, including Bakuchiol and a next-generation retinoid complex, formulated to deliver visible skin renewal and help reduce the look of fine lines without the barrier disruption that traditional retinol often causes. It also contains Ectoin, a stress-protection molecule that helps buffer the skin from the sensitivity that can accompany retinol use. Avoid the immediate eye area; the Radical Repair® Ultra Brightening Eye Balm handles that step separately.
Step 5: Eye Treatment
Radical Repair® Ultra Brightening Eye Balm
Apply around the orbital bone after the serum has absorbed. In the evening, the Radical Repair® Ultra Brightening Eye Balm works alongside the retinol serum to help visibly brighten and firm the appearance of the eye area while the skin is in overnight renewal mode.
Step 6: Seal and Protect
Finish with the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm as the final step. In the evening routine, the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm plays a critical role: it seals the retinol serum in and provides the barrier-fortifying lipids that reduce the likelihood of overnight dryness or sensitivity. For anyone new to retinol who experiences tightness or sensitivity, applying a slightly more generous amount of Radical Repair® Barrier Balm over the serum is the first adjustment to make before reducing retinol frequency.
Weekly Treatment
Radical Repair® Skin Renewal 20% Pro-Mask
Use the Radical Repair® Skin Renewal 20% Pro-Mask once per week as a targeted resurfacing treatment. Apply after cleansing and toning, leave on for the directed time, then rinse thoroughly before continuing with serum, eye treatment, and the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm. On mask nights, skip the retinol serum: the mask provides sufficient exfoliation and renewal activity for that session. Do not use the mask and the retinol serum on the same evening.
The 20% active concentration helps visibly resurface skin texture, improve the look of uneven tone, and support a smoother, more refined appearance over consistent use. HydraCactus Complex® in the formula ensures the resurfacing action is balanced with barrier support, which is what separates a well-formulated exfoliating mask from a purely stripping one.
How to Introduce the Routine
The most common mistake when starting a new skincare system is introducing everything at once. Even a well-formulated system needs time to be introduced properly, particularly when retinol is involved. Follow this sequence:
Week 1 to 2: Foundation Only
Start with the cleanser, tonic, eye balm, and barrier balm morning and evening. Let your skin adjust to the new baseline before adding the retinol. This also gives you a clean read on how your skin responds to the base system without any variable from the retinol.
Week 3 to 4: Introduce the Retinol Serum
Begin using the Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum two to three evenings per week, with rest nights in between. Monitor your skin for any dryness, tightness, or sensitivity. If you experience any, increase the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm application before reducing the retinol frequency.
Week 5 and Beyond: Build to Nightly Use
Gradually increase retinol use toward nightly as your skin builds tolerance. Most people reach comfortable nightly use within four to six weeks. Once the routine is stable, introduce the Radical Repair® Skin Renewal 20% Pro-Mask once per week on a non-retinol night.
Adapting the Routine for Your Skin Type
Oily and Combination Skin
The Radical Repair® Barrier Balm is richer than some oily skin types prefer as a standalone daytime moisturizer. In the morning, a lighter application pressed into the skin rather than massaged on top works well. The barrier balm is particularly valuable in the evening as a retinol buffer and overnight seal. If the AM application feels too heavy, consider using it at night only and pairing with a lighter moisturizer in the morning.
Dry and Very Dry Skin
Dry skin types can use the full routine as written and may benefit from layering the Golden State Nourishing Facial Oil between the retinol serum and the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm in the evening for additional nourishment. Apply the oil to damp skin after the serum has absorbed, then seal with the barrier balm.
Sensitive Skin
Begin retinol at two evenings per week maximum and hold there for at least four weeks before considering an increase. On non-retinol evenings, complete the routine through tonic, eye balm, and barrier balm as normal. This gives the barrier consistent support while giving sensitive skin more time to build tolerance at its own pace. The Radical Repair® Skin Renewal 20% Pro-Mask may be better introduced at once every two weeks initially before moving to weekly use.
Pairing with Other Onekind Products
The Radical Repair® system can be built out with complementary Onekind products at specific steps for additional benefits:
- For brightening: Add the Glow Getter Radiant C Serum to your morning routine between toner and eye balm. Vitamin C in the AM and retinol in the PM is a well-established pairing that supports both brightening and renewal without the instability that comes from layering the two together.
- For deeper nighttime moisture: On non-retinol evenings, the Dream Cream Nighttime Moisturizer can substitute for the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm as a richer overnight moisture step.
- For double cleansing: The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser as a first cleanse before the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser is the most effective approach for daily SPF and makeup wearers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct order to use Radical Repair® products?
Morning: Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser, Radical Repair® Balancing Tonic, Radical Repair® Ultra Brightening Eye Balm, Radical Repair® Barrier Balm, then SPF. Evening: Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser (second cleanse if double cleansing), Radical Repair® Balancing Tonic, Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum, Radical Repair® Ultra Brightening Eye Balm, Radical Repair® Barrier Balm. The general rule is thinnest to thickest texture, with water-based products applied before oil-based and heavier creams or balms always applied last.
Can I use the Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum every night?
Yes, but not right away. The Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum is formulated to be gentler than traditional retinol, using bio-retinol alternatives and Ectoin to minimize barrier disruption. Even so, any retinol or retinol alternative should be introduced gradually: start at two to three evenings per week, observe your skin over four to six weeks, and increase to nightly as tolerance builds. Most people reach comfortable nightly use within that window.
What is HydraCactus Complex® and why does it appear in most of our products?
HydraCactus Complex® is Onekind's proprietary ingredient blend developed exclusively for the Radical Repair® line. It combines prickly pear cactus extract (Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem Extract) and desert date oil (Balanites Aegyptiaca) to help calm the appearance of redness, soften skin texture, and support a balanced, resilient-looking skin barrier. It appears in every product in the system because consistent barrier support at every step is the design philosophy of the line: the cleanser should not undermine what the moisturizer is building, and the toner should prepare the skin for what the retinol is about to do. HydraCactus Complex® is the thread that connects the steps.
Is the Radical Repair® system suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, with appropriate pacing. The system was formulated with barrier integrity as the primary design constraint, which means each product is gentler on the skin barrier than most comparable category products. For sensitive skin, the key is introducing the Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum slowly, starting at twice a week and building gradually. The bio-retinol formulation and the Ectoin buffer in the serum reduce the sensitivity risk significantly compared to traditional retinol. The full base routine (cleanser, tonic, eye balm, barrier balm) is appropriate for daily use on sensitive skin from day one.
How long until I see results from using the Radical Repair® system?
The timeline varies by concern and skin type, but most people notice immediate improvements in hydration and skin comfort from the first use of the base routine. Visible improvements in skin texture and the look of redness typically become noticeable within two to four weeks of consistent daily use. The retinol-related benefits, including visible improvement in the appearance of fine lines and skin renewal, typically emerge over six to twelve weeks of consistent use as the skin's renewal cycle responds. Brightening from the HydraCactus Complex® and stable vitamin C derivatives in the system tends to be visible within four to eight weeks.
Can I use the Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum with vitamin C?
Yes, when layered in the right order across AM and PM rather than on top of each other. Use the Glow Getter Radiant C Serum in the morning (vitamin C is most effective during the day and supports SPF performance) and the Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum in the evening. This AM/PM split is the standard approach for combining these two active categories and avoids the pH incompatibility and potential instability that can occur when they are layered on top of each other in the same routine step.
Can I use the Radical Repair® system during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser and Radical Repair® Barrier Balm are safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum should be paused during pregnancy as a precaution: even though it uses bio-retinol alternatives rather than pure retinoic acid, retinoids as a category are generally recommended to be avoided during pregnancy. As always, consult your healthcare provider with specific questions about your routine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Do I need every product in the Radical Repair® system to see results?
No. Each product in the Radical Repair® line is formulated to work independently as well as within the full system. If you are starting out, the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser and Radical Repair® Barrier Balm together are a strong two-product foundation that delivers meaningful barrier support. Adding the Radical Repair® Balancing Tonic and Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum builds toward a complete routine. The full system with all six products delivers the most comprehensive results, but partial routines are effective and a practical starting point.
What is the difference between the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm and a regular moisturizer?
The Radical Repair® Barrier Balm is formulated specifically around barrier repair rather than surface hydration alone. It contains a blend of barrier-identical lipids, including ingredients that mimic the ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol that make up the skin's natural lipid matrix, along with Ectoin for stress protection and HydraCactus Complex® for visible calming. A standard moisturizer typically focuses on surface hydration and TEWL reduction. The Radical Repair® Barrier Balm does both, but its primary design goal is reinforcing the barrier structure itself, which is what makes it the right sealing step after retinol and a strong overnight recovery product for compromised or sensitive skin.
